What Are Lean Tools

These are the methods and techniques used to enable people to see the waste that is present in their value stream.  It enables them to get an overall view of the present value stream. By constructing a value stream map and visualising it. This represents the value stream with the value added and non-value added steps at present. It will also show the present communication streams. There are seven Wastes or Muda to look for:-

These different types of waste can then be attacked to reduce or better still eradicate them all together using the appropriate Lean tools. The present state value stream map will show numerically the present Lean metrics. Using Lean tools such as Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) up time can be improve to improve efficiency; Scrap and rework can be attacked and reduced using Cause and Effects Diagrams with Action Cards (CEDAC). Quality failures can be stopped from getting to the customer using mistake proofing (Poka yoke). These are only a few of a lot of Lean tools available to us.

You see Lean methods such as VSM take a holistic view of the whole Manufacturing or business process. We then ask how the current state value stream can be improved to remove the waste as much as possible to produce a New vision of a future state. A New action plan involving the appropriate teams in the business is then produced to achieve the New future state over a period of time.

So contact CPT-Lean to help you to move toward a future state with much less waste and therefore less cost in your business!
